Evidence indicates that 20-50% of children with ADHD meet criteria for ASD, and 30-80% of ASD children meet criteria for ADHD. In a population of children diagnosed with ASD, the rate of ADHD + ASD was 42% and the rate of ADHD + ASD + ID was 17%, resulting in a 59% total comorbidity rate of ADHD and ASD. The US National Comorbidity Survey Replication found that adult Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – 4th Edition (DSM-IV) ADHD was highly comorbid with many other DSM-IV disorders in a large subsample of 18–44-year-olds (n=3199) in the US (Figure 2). 2,3 ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental disorder often found in children. Approximately 9.4 percent of U.S. children between the ages of 2 and 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or ADD) and autism are neurodevelopmental disorders that impact similar brain functions.

ADHD and autism spectrum disorder are common psychiatric comorbidities to each another. In addition, there is behavioral, biological and neuropsychological overlap between the two disorders. There are also several important differences between autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. Treatment strategies for the comorbid condition will also be reviewed.
